The Brutus fact is actually the least interesting part. Spinach was meant as a metaphor for the agrarian-based Progressive party that energized Teddy Roosevelt -- the fighting Rough Rider who was the inspiration for Popeye.

I don't know about Brutus, but the inspiration for Popeye was probably Frank "Rocky" Fiegel, a scrappy pipe-smoking fellow known to Elzie Segar, not Teddy Roosevelt.
