Sorry, but the term "American cheese" was originally used to distinguish cheese made in America from European cheese. In other words, it didn't name a particular style of cheese, or to a cheese-making process, but simply to the location where the cheese was made. Any cheese made by anybody living in Europe would be, by definition, European cheese.
Even if the process that eventually was used to make American cheese WAS invented by a German chemist, it's misleading at best and irresponsibly wrong at worst to say that "American" cheese was invented by a German. It just doesn't make any sense.
